My Philosophy

The maternity journey is a significant rite of passage for a woman and will have implications for her transition into parenthood and her mothering experience. Pregnancy and birth are unique life events deserving of the best care possible.

Care by a midwife you choose who understands your individual needs and who supports you in your choices will give you greater satisfaction and confidence to approach and discover birth. I prefer to care for women at home as I believe labour and birth to be more efficient and productive within a familiar environment, and believe my skills are best utilised in this setting.

Homebirth supported by a known midwife has repeatedly been proven to be as safe if not safer than hospital birth for the majority of women (www.birthchoiceuk.com).

It offers enormous physical and psychological advantages for you and your family (www.homebirth.org.uk)...

  • Labour is shorter
  • Fewer drugs are required
  • Fewer medical interventions are required
  • The normal birth rate is greater
  • Fewer forceps, ventouse and caesarean births
  • Your baby is born in better condition
  • Women have greater birth satisfaction

My passion for midwifery has evolved from my personal and professional experiences over the years. I consider it a privilege to attend births and am always amazed by the physical and emotional power, strength, beauty and uniqueness of birth.

My philosophy of care is based on a belief in normal physiology and woman's innate ability to birth, and on the belief that birth is a family event not a medical one. I fully support an open and honest working relationship as I wish to empower my client to make informed choices and have confidence in her ability to birth her baby. When a woman is in control of her choices she is far more likely to feel positive about the birth experience and mothering. My manner is calm, quiet, observant and supportive.

In short, my philosophy is :

Your pregnancy ● Your baby ● Your birth ● Your choice

She is the most amazing midwife, and I feel so lucky to have had her look after me and our babies throughout my pregnancies. Having such a fantastic midwife has definitely added to the enjoyment of pregnancy and even labour, having such calming support makes you relax and enjoy the birth too.

My husband said after the birth of our 4th baby that, "Jane oozes coolness and is just so awesome", lets hope I can talk him round to having another baby so Jane can ooze some coolness once more!!!!

Her calmness when talking about even the most emotive subjects gave us strength to pursue what we really wanted from both our births without feeling pressurized or feeling that we were wrong. Amanda & Andrew, homebirth with Jane for the third baby at 42 weeks of pregnancy and the fourth at 43 weeks of pregnancy!

We will always remember the help and support you gave us, making the birth of Adam an experience I will always treasure. Already it was a year ago and he is a fabulous son and little brother! Thank you all over again. Yolanda & Rob, May 2005, home VBAC

You really did seem so in tune with my wishes and needs at a time when I was not able to initiate requests, only respond to suggestions. The image of your gentleness and confidence remains very vivid to me. Thank you so much for being there in every sense. Pauline & Mark, first baby

I have never experienced such a spiritual and enlightening encounter such as the one I experienced when birthing Leith, we are very fortunate to have had you there with us. Helen and Christian, first baby, waterbirth
